Storm og Stilhed – noter fra vest, er en grafisk installation af Munk & Jerichau, skabt til Redningshuset ved Det Nordatlantiske Fyr i Hanstholm. Her zoomes ind på naturens foranderlighed og sårbarhed. Med sanselig opmærksomhed og et fotografisk blik udforskes fænomener og spor i landskabet ved havet – øjebliksbilleder sat i stå med kameraet og omsat til grafiske fotogravure tryk – en teknik der fremkalder en særlig stoflighed og forstærker den sanselige oplevelse.
Projektets afsæt og afgrænsning er en langstrakt matrikel på 35 ha klemt inde mellem Vesterhavet mod vest og hovedvej 181 mod øst. Inspireret af den tilhørende 130 år gamle strandfogedgårds bjergningsprotokol, der har fulgt slægten gennem flere generationer, har Munk & Jerichau dagbogsagtigt over flere perioder registreret og samlet materiale som noter og fotografiske optagelse af naturens daglige forandringer.
Hvad er værdifuldt for os i dag i den aktuelle situation med klimaforandringer, muterende virus og stigende stress? Her synes stedet i landskabet, i naturen mod vest som et vigtigt rum at dykke ned i og folde ud. Ved at holde fokus på det afgrænsede sted, skærpes blikket på de små og store fænomener. Der skabes en forbindelse til noget oprindeligt menneskeligt, historien og en særlig urkraft.
I kataloget Noter fra vest, der udgives i forbindelse med udstillingen, samles poetiske tekster, noter, citater og billeder, der dykker ned i flere lag af processen ved havet.
Det Nordatlantiske Fyr i Hanstholm er et ’udstillingssted for det banebrydende, det aktuelle og det eksperimenterende. Et stykke kulturarv og et levende sted for samtidskunst, der holder forbindelse mellem det nære og det fjerne’.
Billedkunstnerne Birgitte Munk og Vibeke Jerichau har i arbejdsfællesskabet Munk & Jerichau, skabt flere fælles grafiske serier og udstillinger med fokus på fotogravuren.

Storm and Silence – notes from the west
An exhibition that uses photographs to convey an atmosphere of eternity and the vulnerability of nature
Storm and Silence – notes from the west, is a graphic installation by Munk & Jerichau, created for the Rescue House at the North Atlantic Lighthouse in Hanstholm. Here, the changeability and vulnerability of nature is zoomed in on. Sensuous attention and a photographic gaze are combined to explore phenomena and traces in the sea landscape – snapshots suspended in time through the camera lens and converted into graphic photographic prints – a technique that evokes a special texture and enhances the sensuous experience
The focal point and delimitation of the project is an elongated plot of land that stretches 35 hectares, sandwiched between the North Sea to the west and main road 181 to the east. Inspired by the accompanying 130-year-old beach bailiff’s salvage protocol, which has followed the family for several generations, Munk & Jerichau have, over several periods, registered and collected material such as notes and photographic recordings of nature’s daily changes.
What is valuable to us today in the current situation of climate change, mutating viruses and ever- increasing stress? This place in the landscape, in nature to the west, seems like an important space to dive into and unfold. By keeping the focus on this demarcated area, the gaze is sharpened on phenomena both great and small. A connection is formed to something originally human, the history and a special primordial force.
The catalog Notes from the West, published in connection with the exhibition, is a collection of poetic texts, notes, quotes and images that dive into several layers of the process by the sea.
The North Atlantic Lighthouse in Hanstholm is an ’exhibition space for ground-breaking, current and experimental works. A piece of cultural heritage and a living place for contemporary art that connects the near and the far.’
The visual artists Birgitte Munk and Vibeke Jerichau have created several joint graphic series and exhibitions that focus on photogravure in their collaborative work as Munk & Jerichau.
