On the edge
The North Atlantic Lighthouse
If you are seeking an experience with cultural gravity, head to the lighthouse in Hanstholm.
Here, the man-made complex and the wild nature meet in a rarely-seen beauty. There is access to the lighthouse during daylight hours every day year-round, and from the top, you have one of the most spectacular views on the Danish west coast.

During the exhibition season, we present contemporary art from all over the North Atlantic both outdoors and indoors and sometimes also around Hanstholm town.
Our exhibition attendants are excellent guides to local life, and in our café area, you can find information about Thy National Park and all our many other friends in the area.
If you can’t get enough of Hanstholm Lighthouse, it is possible to book one of our apartments right up to the lighthouse with views of the North Sea, the church and the lighthouse courtyard.

you can’t get a better view on this part of the west coast
The people at the lighthouse, staff, as well as volunteers, are part of the self-governing cultural institution The North Atlantic Lighthouse in Hanstholm. Together we work for the place to be open, accessible, well-cared-for and professional.
Hanstholm Art Space is our platform for North Atlantic contemporary art supported by a wide range of Danish foundations. The program varies with alternating exhibitions of different genres and formats.
Hanstholm Lighthouse was the first lighthouse to be erected on the Danish west coast. The lighthouse is still functioning and provides a crucial insight into maritime traffic around the maritime nation of Denmark. Locally, the lighthouse is a landmark for the area and a vital part of our identity and self-understanding.
Whether you want to go up the lighthouse or whether you come to encounter the art or you want to experience both the lighthouse and art, it only costs you DKK 30.
The lighthouse is a socioeconomic, nonprofit company, so all revenue goes directly back into the operation and development of the site.
tHIS IS WHY YOU OUGHT TO
VISIT HANSTHOLM LIGHTHOUSE
according to Marie Louise, managing director
You are struck by an eternal dualism at Hanstholm Lighthouse.
It is the story of the human struggle against and cohesion with nature that is dramatically played out near the wild west coast.
At the top of the lighthouse, you can recognise humans’ longing to travel, and understand how the ocean has been our way to create an outlook and bring new things back with us.
At Hanstholm Lighthouse, we are always playing with the curiosity that characterises humans, and that binds us together across the North Atlantic.
It’s about some cultural communities where nature acts as the bearing element.
And so it’s about what we popularly call the Anthropocene – the current geological epoch in which the consequence of human impact on the earth helps globalise our humanitarian challenges and erode national, ethnic and cultural differences.
